Amarna House

I watched Pam and learned…. I have heard her described as a living icon…. she said its better than being a dead one! There are lots of organisations that need help. Not only is Pam a Vice President of Attend, but she is also President of the Friends of Amarna House.

Amarna House

AmarnaHouse is a lovely purpose built care home in York, and I was very excited that I was going to be making a visit. It would be my longest trip away from home without Catherine (she’s my hero)  So there was a long drive up the M1 and we got to stay at the Grange Hotel. I was very excited. They made me feel so welcome. We had dinner with the Peter Emery from HC-One who own the home. Pam sat next to him. I had my own chair between David and Steve Moreton. I particularly enjoyed trying the rabbit they had for main course… after all folks, its in my genes…I then found that in my room, I had my own bed and water bowl… how nice was that. If you are a dog , I would really recommend you persuade your owner to take you there.

I was quite surprised at how big the home was.. it has 80 beds, but it is arranged internally with 4 separate units so it really does feel very homely. I met a lovely lady Doris who gave me lots of cuddles and told me all about the dogs she had in her life. Most were much bigger than me, and I fitted onto her lap just perfectly. The Manager there is new, her name is Charlie and she told us all about the difference volunteers could make. They are particularly looking for people to help with activities and befriending. If you want to get involved why not email the lovely Hilary.

The room where I met some people

I also got to understand what the fundraising I was doing might help pay for: it could help fund outings, or mean that there could be extra people to do activities. The staff are so busy that extra pairs of hands are needed.

So my mind was made up…. I wanted to volunteer for all those young people with Brain Injury (and I was so grateful it wasn’t me) and all the older folks (because that might be me). I wanted to show them that I cared. I know I don’t live near York or London but it really doesn’t matter: the point is I can do something to help, I may be small but I can make a difference. I am also hoping that some of Pam’s spirit rubs off on me: when I am 12 (you can all do the sums) I want to have her zest for life and optimism that you still have something to offer.
